My Favorite Plants with Stephen: Gumnut!

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 02:37 PM PDT

Courtesy of the great, madcap Stephen Notley (as always)...

Usually when we create plants, a designer goes off and writes a design, then hands it off to the artists and engineers to bring it to life. Occasionally, though, we'll hold all-team brainstorming sessions, where everybody --designers, artists, engineers, quality assurance, community & product management-- sits around and suggests ideas. It's fun when we get to do this, as it gives everybody on the team a chance to pitch in on the more creative aspects of the game. Gumnut is an exemplary example of a plant that came out of this process.

Usually the brainstorming involves suggestions in three broad categories: real-life plants, possible mechanics, and jokes/gags. Folks throw out ideas and see what sticks. Often a random suggestion in one area can connect to a notion in another, and so it was with Gumnut. An engineer had already pitched the mechanic of a plant tangling up a zombie and making it into a barrier. Along came our very own Haemophilius, who suggested this weird-looking "gumnut" from her native Australia. One Google search later, we were approvingly examining the oddly-shaped beast, with its round nut capped with a distinctive funnel-shape sticking out of it. Neato! And then the word "gum" triggered the gag: this thing could blow a big chewing-gum bubble, which would then pop and get stuck to a zombie's shoe, pinning it to the ground. Boof! Welcome aboard, Gumnut!

Barrier plants are tough sells as premium plants. Folks tend to prefer plants that do loads of damage to defensive or support plants, so we really had to push Gumnut to make it worth the trouble. The secret is making the barrier proportional to the strength of the zombie. Pop one on a normal zombie, and you get a normal barrier. Fair enough. Pop one on a Gargantuar, though, and you get an enormous barrier that stops the Gargantuar along with everything behind it cold. Gumnut's even more effective against Football Mechs, who usually just push barriers ahead of themselves, but find themselves stopped dead by Gumnut. Thanks, Gumnut! Word of warning, though: since the strength of Gumnut's barrier is proportional to the strength of the gummed zombie, and it goes away once the gummed zombie is destroyed, for the sake of you, your ancestors, and your descendants, don't use it against chickens and weasels. DON'T DO IT, FOOLS! Do you want your brains eaten? Yeesh!
