My Favorite Plants with Stephen: Escape Root!

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 02:18 PM PDT

Gather round, grab a warm drink (it's cold and rainy in Seattle today) and settle in for this week's episode of Favorite Plants with the magnificent Stephen Notley!

One of the concepts we consider when we're designing plants is what we call "mental load." Most of time, you plant a plant and it does its thing. Plant and forget. But there's a sub-category of plants that require you to do something: "tap to activate" plants like Banana Launcher, Jack O' Lantern, and Strawburst. You have to pay attention to these plants, keep an eye on them all the time to make sure you're getting the most (or anything) out of them. They can be powerful, but there's a cost in the player's attention that we have to take into account.

Escape Root is one of these plants, and he gets overlooked a fair bit as a result. You really have to think about him to use him. Where do I put him? Which plant to I want to swap with him? Do I like where he'll end up once I swap him? Sounds a lot like work, so it's usually easier to skip Escape Root in favor of somebody else.

This, to my mind, is a dang-darned shame. It's easy to forget that even though Escape Root's big gimmick is the ability to swap places with another plant, his secondary ability --turning into a Potato Mine, Primal Potato Mine or Grapeshot when eaten-- is pretty dope, or "boss" if you're hip to how the young people speak these days. You get a lot of diverse bang for your sun buck with Escape Root, even if you never once use his primary ability.

And if you do wanna take on that mental load? Well, then, welcome to the party, pal! When you're dealing with a Protect the Plant situation, whether in Adventure or Penny's Pursuits, Escape Root is the next best thing to a cheat code. We even call him "Cheaty" in the office. That's not true, but it could be, because it would be an appropriate nickname for somebody whose ability in those circumstances was so useful it was tantamount to cheating. Best part is: it's not actually cheating! If you have Escape Root, you get to use him in the game! How's THAT for awesome?
