My Favorite Plants with Stephen!: Tumbleweed!

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 09:56 AM PST

A day late but always the right time for a new episode of 'Favorite Plants' with Stephen Notley!

I've talked before about tap-to-activate plants, and how they present problems compared to the more typical plant-and-forget plants. Tumbleweed, to my mind, kind of fits in between those two classes.

Really, he's not so much a plant as a single projectile, so he requires a lot more consideration and player action to use than, say, an Apple Mortar. But you're still just dropping and planting from the seed slots like you would any other plant, and it's not like you have to think about what to do with any particular Tumbleweed after you've launched him. He's just fun, bouncing down the lawn, making good things happen wherever he goes. I didn't design him, but I wish I had.

For such a simple plant, Tumbleweed does a lot of stuff. Damage, naturally, but also some knockback and then you've got that chance-to-stun/chance-to-toss going as well. Speaking of bonuses, why don't I mention that chance-to-fire-multiple-Tumbleweeds thing he's got going on? No good reason, so I will! In fact, I just did!

Based off of a Bowling Bulb projectile, Tumbleweed works best against big crowds, where each shot can bounce around causing havoc in the zombie lines. He's crazy cheap with a fast cooldown, so he's great for clutch moments when you've got some extra sun and just want to respond to a developing situation. And, hey, would you look at that... he's in the Appease-mint family, and he gets lit up by Torchwood. Synergy! We love that around here! More, please!
