New to PvZ2. Should I pull my punches?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:46 AM PST

I love the original Plants vs. Zombies and recently I decided to give the sequel a try. Part of me is expecting the game to be too easy if I go all out with the leveling up system, plant food, power-ups, etc.

My question is: should I refrain from using plant food, power ups, and/or mints? also, how far should I level up my plants if I don't want the game to be too easy?

So far I've played a couple levels without any plant food, power ups, or leveling up (except for the mandatory pea shooter level up) and the only level I've gotten to that's giving me trouble is Dark Ages level 6, where you have to plant all your plants at once with limited sun.

Some tips (a very long PvZ2 post)

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 04:33 AM PST

I've been playing this game a while and I've seen a fair few people recently who have just picked up PvZ2, so I thought I'd make a list of things that are useful to know and that the game doesn't actually tell you about. There's probably much more than what I'm going to put, but these are a few things that I've picked up when it comes to grinding seed packets, getting coins and gems, and some general tips:

    General:

    1. Plant Marigolds in the Zen Garden: The Zen Garden can be useful to boost up your plants for certain tricky Adventure Levels or Penny's Pursuit levels, but honestly I find its best use to be planting Marigolds for free coins. Sprouts are pretty common drops, and if you don't use them you'll likely have a stash of around 300 just sitting around. A Marigold gives 250 coins when you grow it, which isn't much, but it adds up. Plus, unless you try and gamble with getting a good plant to boost, the sprouts aren't going to be used for anything else.
    2. Claim a free daily pinata and do Pinata Parties everyday: In the store, you get 10 seed packets for free everyday, as well as some offers to buy seed packets for all the plants you get from adventure. It's always worth checking to see if something really good comes up (Primal Potato Mine, Bowling Bulb, Tile Turnip, etc.), and free seed packets are always welcome.
Pinata Parties are ALWAYS worth doing - during the first week a new seedium is released, there are often seed packets in the Pinata Parties for the new plant. So last week there were seed packets for Stickybomb Rice in there. This week it's StarFruit seed packets, as he is the star plant in arena right now (no pun intended). Even outside of them, you get some seed packets for adventure plants and sometimes even for some of the gem plants and premium plants if you're lucky. Plus you get minimum 2000 coins if you watch an ad to play the Pinata Party twice.
    3. Do the worlds in difficulty order: Trust me when I say you will suffer otherwise. The hardest worlds I'd say are Dark Ages, Big Wave Beach and Modern Day. Jurassic Marsh and Neon Mixtape Tour are also up there, but aren't as tough for the most part. After Ancient Egypt, I'd say Pirate Seas, Wild West or Lost City are good ones to play through. Frostbite Caves and Far Future are in the middle. Save Big Wave Beach until the very end, as the plants from it aren't immediately that useful for the rest of the worlds, and it contains the hardest levels in the game.
    4. Level your plants: If you want to make the game more difficult, you can put off levelling until you've finished adventure mode, but even some of the adventure mode levels are very, very difficult without levelling. Arena and Penny's Pursuit require plant levelling to be competitive however, so if you want to get into them seriously, levelling is what you'll have to do.
    5. Do Pinata Trackers early on: You can gain three pinatas every day for replaying levels from any world. The world you choose will be the world plants you get pinatas for - so if you choose Far Future, you'll get a Far Future Pinata. These becomes less useful when your plants are higher level as the amount of seed packets they give is kind of pitiful, but when you're starting out they can give you a leg up. They can be completely skipped without too much penalty though if you don't fancy the daily grind.
    6. Most of the plants you buy for gems are good: I see this question pop up the most - what plant to spend 100 gems on. Honestly, most of them are really good. There's only one or two of the plants that aren't great, but I'll give a rundown of them all below:
Hurrikale: One of the best plants to stall with. Blows a lane back to the rightmost square and chills them all, so it takes longer for them to all reach the house. Very effective when combined with a cherry bomb or other AoE instant plant, as it can kill them all if they are bunched up. Also has a fairly fast recharge for a stall plant compared to others. Hurrikale sees alot of use in Penny's Pursuit, where it's stalls is very useful for tougher zombies. All around a very good plant.
Lava Guava: One of my personal favourites - explodes like a weak cherry bomb, then leaves behind a lava tile where you planted it after it explodes, dealing heavy damage to any zombie that walks through it. Useful with Hurrikale as it can then damage all zombies in one lane. It also has a fast recharge compared to something like Cherry Bomb, so it's much better as a clutch plant to finish off zombies near the house.
Shrinking Violet: Incredibly useful plant for many situations. Shrinks zombies in a 3x3 area, halving their health and damage. Also instantly kills imps if they are caught in the radius. Also recharges quite fast. Is absolutely devastating with plants like Melon-Pult who can output the damage to kill off zombies quickly. And all for 50 sun. Very neat plant.
Pea-Nut: A Wall-Nut and a Peashooter combined into one plant. In Adventure proves to be extremely useful as it can tank a decent amount of zombie density whilst still dishing out damage AND protecting your defences. Again, this one is one of my favourites. An excellent plant to put down as a first offensive plant, as very few zombies that spawn right at the beginning have the power to take it out before it kills them. It's Plant Food ability also gives it extra health and shoots a storm of peas down a lane.
Homing Thistle: It's Cattail from the first game, but nerfed. One of them can cover the whole lawn, and it attacks the zombie that's closest to the house. Very useful when spammed, as it has quite a nice damage output, but it's also expensive for what it does. It's good for worlds where zombies get into your backline, like Wild West, and is generally good if you have two or three of them to compliment other plants, but not all that useful on it's own as it gets overwhelmed fairly quickly.
Fire Peashooter: Has around the same damage output as a Repeater, and warms nearby plants in Frostbite Caves. A very good pickup if you don't have many levelled plants yet, as it's damage output is quite effective for its price. All around a decent offensive plant.
Jalepeno: Identical to the first game - an insta kill plant for one lane. Kind of outclassed by some other insta-kill plants, but can be useful in certain worlds. A decent pickup.
Squash: Also identical to the first game. Deals heavy damage to one tile of zombies that it sits on. When levelled, Squash becomes very strong as it can squash up to 3 different zombies at higher levels. When level 1 though, it's not very good. Leave this one as one of the last gem plants you unlock.
Hypno-Shroom: Again, indentical to the first game. Probably the worst gem plant to buy, as many zombies can simply bypass Hypno-Shrooms effect as it has to be eaten to hypnotize a zombie. It also only affects a single zombie and has a pretty long recharge. It's also quite costly. Not recommended.
    7. Do daily and weekly quests if you can: The Travel Log gives you around 25 gems and 5 mints every day if you do the quests there. The quests are normally quite simple - collect 40 seed packets, win an arena match, play a game of Penny's Pursuit, etc. Also, whenever a new plant or mint is released, a new quest normally pops up with a chance to get 50 seed packets for the new plant, or some mints if there's a new mint. These are also worth doing.
When you've completed all the Adventure levels, more quests pop up weekly giving you more challenging levels to play for 100 gems reward. These levels are designed for levelled plants however, so they may be tough.
    8. The higher league you are in Arena, the more seed packets you get from buying Pinatas for gems: Sorry to all you players who hate arena, but the higher league you're in, the more seed packets you get. The 100 gem pinatas start with giving you 120 seed packets in Soil League but cap at 260 if you manage to get into Jade League. If you have alot of gems and are thinking of spending them to get seed packets, wait until you're in a higher league to do it, as you can get double value from the base value. I'm aware not everyone likes to play Arena, so to some players this will be a kick in the teeth. However, this is what we've got.
    9. Arena is the best way to get most resources in the game: Again, I know it sucks if you don't like Arena, but it's the truth. Power Mints are almost exclusively locked behind Arena to even obtain them due to the currency only being obtainable through winning in Arena (you can get a very small amount from doing quests when a new mint or arena is released, but it'll take you months to be able to afford one mint). Pinatas are given out for win streaks, and the new seedium seed packets are also obtainable in the greatest number from arena.
The good news is that you don't have to grind Arena excessively to get good rewards if you play it right - because new seedium seasons last for around a month, you only need to win 3 games a day to unlock the new seedium by the time the season ends. And in the lower leagues, 3 wins a day is normally enough to get promoted and get into the next league, giving you even more rewards. If you want the maximum rewards however, you'll need to win about 8 games every day to reach 1000 crowns by the end of the season, which can be a time sink. Seasons usually give enough seed packets to level the new plant to about level 5 if you grind out all the seed packets, if you don't buy more seed packets for it in the store.
Gauntlets are the gate for arena progress - you can buy them for gems, or get 4 free every day by watching ads. You also get a free arena play every 4 hours, which can really help conserve your gauntlets.
    10. Don't forget Penny's Pursuit!: Penny's Pursuit is kind of more endgame content, as the levels can be extremely tricky without levelled plants, but it gives a good amount of seed packets for seediums that have usually already been showcased in arena. A good example is the latest Penny's Pursuit which has been for Ice Bloom. Again, Penny's Pursuit is gated by a currency - fuel. Each level takes 5 fuel, and each fuel takes 20 minutes to recharge. You can also fight Zomboss three times a day when your zps meter reaches 100%. If you manage to kill Zomboss early and get to the bonus prize phase, the zombies start dropping gems, so the stronger your defence, the better.

And I think that's everything for now. I may make a list of the plants that are meta for most gamemodes at a later date, but I just wanted to put some points out there to help some of the players who are new or returning to the game after it's release, as lots has changed in the 7 years this game has been out. If anyone has any questions, just comment and I'll answer them.

    Hope this helps!
