ZCorp Consultants need to at least be telegraphed

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 04:11 AM PST

I honestly have no idea how ZCorp Consultants (ZCC) made it through any form of playtesting, because ZCCs are very poorly designed.

Out of every zombie in the game, ZCCs exceed pretty much everything else in terms of the threat they present. On 3-chili difficulties with this week's Zomboss, a ZCC can wipe out multiple lanes of plants and then trip up one of your lawnmowers within a few seconds with the help of a single potion. They are incredibly dangerous to deal with.

With that in mind, it baffles me that ZCC zombies are essentially not telegraphed at all, which adds to the sense that they are complete and utter bullshit. For every other dangerous zombie in the game, they are either slow enough to not require telegraphing, are telegraphed through sound effects, have their "danger states" clearly telegraphed with a pause, or are limited in the scope of the damage they can cause.

Most dangerous zombies tend to fall into the first category. Gargantuars, Octo, Wizard, Medusa, and many other zombies with dangerous, long-reaching effects move fairly slowly, so even if they have absurdly powerful attacks/counter specific strategies and have high HP, by virtue of their slow movement you can react to them by default.

Some zombies are strongly telegraphed through their sound effects. Piano zombies especially come to mind; given that piano zombies can alter the way that normal zombies move, it's fair that we get some warning about their impending presence through their music. Likewise, zombies like the Jester zombie have very clear, loud, distinctive sound effects when they are reflecting your projectiles, letting you know that you need to respond to them right away. Back in PvZ1, dolphin zombies would be cued by a dolphin noise so you'd remember to plop down a lily pad or tangle kelp.

Many "fast" zombies similar to ZCCs tend to have two distinct states that are well-telegraphed by a long pause animation (and, often, a loud, clearly distinct noise) to signal a shift between a relatively harmless base state and a fairly dangerous secondary state. The chicken wrangler, weasel hoarder, and the infamous newspaper zombie all telegraph the danger they pose in this way, between clucking chickens, the weasel hoarder animation, or the brief realization and grunt of anger that the sunday edition zombies give off.

The last category of zombies are speedy and poorly telegraphed but are usually limited in the damage they can cause. Blastronauts move very quickly and are fairly tanky, but if you kill them they don't actually do any damage to your plants. Super-Fan Imps, when punted forward, instant-kill only one plant. All-Star Zombies instantly kill one plant on your front line with rapid speed and high hp, but then essentially become a normal zombie afterwards.

Telegraphing is an extremely basic part of game design. It's what makes games like Dark Souls fair in spite of their brutally punishing design; every high damage enemy attack is well-telegraphed, giving players a chance to respond. For the most part, PvZ2 does a good job of telegraphing where it's needed, which is why I'm surprised to see something as badly designed as the ZCC make her way into the game. Between their fast and erratic movement patterns and their complete lack of useful telegraphing -- no unique, or at least clearly prioritized, sounds to accompany them, small unit size making them hard to pick out or notice when they enter the screen among other zombies -- ZCCs feel like bullshit to a lot of players because, at the moment, they pretty much are. Adding some kind of telegraphing gives players a moment to double check their defenses for any gaps, or to use their instant kills before the ZCC spirals out of control.

    Survival endless in pvz 2

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 03:38 AM PST

Is it just me who really wants this gamemode ? Because honestly, with so many plants constantly being added to the game, levels and stuff I think this would open some doors for awesome actual strategies, because in normal game you can barely build a defense cause levels are so quick. I'd love to have this gamemode added to make sense why they keep adding more and more plants.
